A Day in the Life
Coffee-We won’t speak for everyone out there in the profession but in our office most days start with a cup of coffee! Some of us come in with a travel mug from home, or some grab a mug when they get into the office. The common thread is a shared love/need for that morning Joe.
Drawing-Hand sketching is still a major part of our process in the studio. It is also another great opportunity for us to get together around a plan and bounce ideas off each other and test out different approaches to a site or a detail. There are so many benefits to the tactile connection to the sheet when drawing, not to mention the cathartic release of crumpling up a sheet of trace when things just aren’t working!!
Impromptu meetings and conversation-Aligning flexible schedules to maximize time together in the office allows frequent conversations on design, detailing or local sports griping! Time in office together frequently includes side conversations about planting design, new or interesting materials we want to try out or just getting a fresh opinion on design and project development. The ability to bounce ideas back and forth often tends to lead to new revelations on how to approach an issue.
Construction services-When our projects are under construction we follow the process closely. From responding to questions that arise during procurement and product acquisition to reviewing mock-ups in the field this period of the project is where we can really start to see a vision becoming reality!
Coffee walk-Maintaining the appropriate caffeine levels throughout the day often requires an afternoon beverage. It’s also a great chance to get out of the office and take walk downtown and get a little sun and fresh air!
Drafting-Taking a plan from a sketch or a set of sketches to a document that can be built from is a crucial step in taking a project from a concept to reality. Drafting can get a bad rap; sure, it is exacting and sometimes a little dry but working out all the finer nuances of a design can be the difference between a good design and a great one. #wlam #sikorawellsappel #landscapearchitect #actionthroughpractice #dayinthelife #landscapearchitecture
