This landscape renovation planning and design project was prompted by the relocation of a half-mile portion of State Route 52, which bisects the eastern half of Longwood Gardens, one of the world’s foremost horticultural showcases. The client’s main goal was to preserve and protect the physical and cultural aspects of the early 20th century agricultural landscape affected by the new road. This required restoring the landscape where the road was removed; developing grading and planting plans that provided unobstructed natural vistas; and screened the view and sound of the new road from Longwood’s visitors. The restoration involved the creation of over 30 acres of warm season native grass meadow, 20 acres of reforestation, new woodland edge plantings, stream mitigation, wetlands and the creation of new stormwater infiltration sites.
