DNC Philly Day of Play
Philly’s ‘Day of Play Extravaganza’ was an event organized jointly by Councilman Henon’s office and the Health Promotion Council that was held during the 2016 Democratic National Convention at City Hall’s Dilworth Park. The event was a celebration of play and brought together well over 1,000 children from all over Philadelphia, as well as a number of organizations committed to play such as Smith Playground, the Free Library, Mural Arts, and Public Workshop. After working with the Community Design Collaborative on the initial design, Sikora Wells Appel was commissioned to design creative placemaking elements to add excitement and fun to the event. Our team created a custom Philly Play photo frame as well as oversized iconic letters that spelled ‘PLAY’ and encouraged children to scramble, slide, hide in and jump on them. These playful letters continue to show up at different venues and settings well past the Day of Play event. We also helped decorate City Hall with giant balloons, pennant flags and windsocks to create a huge outdoor party atmosphere at City Hall.
